Colleyville Texas Police Department
Challenge
Colleyville Police Department continues to find new and innovative ways to bring wellness into their department.
While mindfulness for law enforcement is common in larger cities outside Texas, Colleyville is ahead of the curve in bringing Mindfulness for Job-Related Stress and Trauma to their team.
Because this was new for them, they wanted a structure that could provide a robust training with a smaller time and budget commitment.
Approach
We decided on two, two-hour mindfulness workshops for their team. The workshops were identical but provided time/day options for shift workers.
Workshops consisted of learning about the neurobiology of stress and trauma and why it matters to their overall health and wellness. Throughout the training they participated in experiential techniques so they had a “toolbox” of knowledge to use as they moved forward.
Workshops were held in-person in their training room, with accompanying slides and worksheets.
Results
The groups were small and engaged. Workshops were not mandatory, and all participants were there voluntarily. We have kept in touch with a few participants who have shared with us that they continue to use the techniques learned while experiencing stress on the job.
The Mindful Project continued to offer support by creating free custom flyers to be displayed around the department with reminders of mindfulness and stress-reduction techniques to be used during the day.
